FROM
THE DEPARTMENT’S HEAD
Short History
Since its establishment in 1982, the Department of the Electronics and
Communication Engineering has been founded with a threefold mission in
teaching, research and public service. Based on that foundation, the
Department has been developing with its infrastructure and academic
staff and accepting nearly a hundred students each year selected by the
ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement for the Higher Education in
TURKEY), so the total capacity has reached up to six hundred students
for the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in the Electronics and
Communication Engineering at the end of the fourth year.
Our Mission and Vision
The purpose of the Department of the Electronics and Communication
Engineering is essentially to provide professional training in the
world-class level and at the same time to participate actively in
applied and theoretical research. So the graduated engineers have
universal acceptance, solid foundation, ability for learning and
leadership during their lifetimes and of course strong ethical values.
Subjected to the purpose, the first two semesters of the undergraduate
program are designed for students to acquire a sound knowledge of the
basic sciences, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and algorithm,
computer programming together with an understanding of economics,
social sciences and humanities before specialization takes place. The
third and fourth semesters cover the fundamental engineering subjects
such as Fundamentals of the Electrical Circuits, Analysis of Circuits
and Systems, Signals and Systems, Electromagnetic Field Theory,
Introduction to Electronics. All the major subjects of the Electronics
and Communication Engineering are completed in the fifth and sixth
semesters. Among these subjects, Electronics, Microprocessor-Systems,
Analog and Digital Communication, Logic Circuits, Electromagnetic Waves
and Microwave Theory and Technique can be considered. In addition, the
Professional English is given during all these three years.
The
graduation theses/projects are prepared in the fourth year and intended
to generate realistic and innovative solutions for the current and
future technological needs. For this purpose the research facilities of
the department are employed, at the same time all the members are
encouraged to take part in the externally sponsored project works. So,
in this way a mutual beneficial link is established between the
university and the industry, which not only motivates the research
activities in the Department, but at the same time constitute a
feedback between the present and future needs of the industry and the
educational programs of the Department. Furthermore the technical
elective courses are offered to the students to specialize in some
advanced subjects of the current technology. The program is also
integrated with 60 work day internship in two consecutive summers. As a
result, by this undergraduate program, the Department essentially aims
at professional Electronics and Communication engineers in the
world-class level with the performance of good English and Computer
Programming.
Last Condition
The Department is unique in having the only GSM test and measurement
laboratory in Turkey. The Department has also all basic laboratories
such as circuits, communications, antennas and microwaves, and power
electronics, microprocessor based system design laboratories. The
Department academic staff consists of 7 professors, 2 associate
professors, 9 assistant professors and 21 research assistants in the
following four divisions:
Research, on the other hand, has the vital importance in the higher
education. In the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department,
high quality academic programs provide a strong background for
the directed research that form a part of the Master of
Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in
either Electronics or Communication Engineering.
All
the university requirements for the degree of M.S. and Ph.D. can be
found out in the Academic Rules and Regulations.
The
students may specialize in the fields of circuits and systems,
electronics power electronics, communications, signal processing,
electromagnetic fields, microwave theory and techniques.
Some
of the major research activities are: Artificial intelligence and
its applications, pattern recognition, VLSI design, solid-state
electronics, optoelectronics, signal processing, data transmission,
synchronization and equalization, coding techniques, speech processing,
scattering and diffraction problems, antennas and radar, active and
passive microwave devices and systems, broadband matching.
